🛳️⚙️ Commercial Chief Engineers and Yachting Roles 🛳️⚙️Ever wondered why seasoned Commercial Chief Engineers sometimes face hurdles in securing roles within the yachting industry? It's a nuanced challenge. While commanding the engine rooms of massive tankers, cargo ships, or cruise liners equips you with invaluable and incomparable expertise, the day to day dynamic of yachts, especially those under 100m, requires a different approach. Yacht Chiefs must be hands-on and ready to dive into action when the team is stretched thin. This (rightly or wrongly) leads hiring managers to wonder if a Class 1 Commercial Chief Engineer still possesses those crucial hands-on skills. One key misstep I've observed is the emphasis on managerial prowess on CVs. This sometimes overshadows the practical skills essential for yacht engineering. Recognising that a yacht chief engineer's role is inherently hands-on a lot of the time, tailor your CV accordingly. Downplay the "I managed a department of 140 team members" and highlight your enthusiasm and willingness for rolling up your sleeves and getting hands-on.This strategic shift will undoubtedly improve your chances of making it to the interview stage. In the world of yachting, being a hands-on Chief Engineer is often the hallmark of success. ⚓🔧The Crew Hunter

"I need to get back to Sea!!!" I could hear the frustation in his voice but the 3 years in cold, northern Germany had gotten to him. So this begs the question, "Are new-build projects as glamorous as they are made out to be?". I think most engineers will probably say yes but isn't the point of being a mariner to be at sea? Before you head off to an ice-cold northern European shipyard, perhaps give the below a read.I haven't had the opportunity to build a ship as yet, but I have worked very closely with a number of teams, crew, and management teams that have or are currently building new vessels, and there certainly are some pros and cons to working on a new-build. So this is what you should know:PROs1. Exposure to shipbuilding. And that's not just the technical aspects; you will see exactly what it takes to build a vessel from concept through to completion and learn an incredible amount along the way, setting you up for a future management or leadership position.2. The pay. Your salary could go up by as much as 30–40% to join a permanent build team on a project. You may also be provided additional perks such as cars, accommodation, and regular flights home to ensure you are the happiest you can be throughout the lifetime of the project.3. Elevated career status. This, I feel, is why most people choose new builds, as your CV will show that a company or owner has trusted you and your skill set to supervise their investment, which is more than likely worth tens of millions of euros. CONS1. The cold, rainy, dark, long winters. You may be away from your family and far from home; you may not speak the language; and if you have joined from the start, you may be looking at 5 days a week and 3–4 years on land working on the project.2. Tedious work. You will need to go through countless acceptance tests, inspections, and commissioning documentation during the course of the build, not to mention needing to record and document everything as thoroughly as possible, plus setup and start the PMS, which in itself is a significant undertaking.3. No more adventure. I think most mariners have this innate desire to explore and see the world. That stops until the ship you are building is delivered and you set sail. No more time off in the sun, a day break in a new city or even a run up a mountain after a passage. Please feel free to drop a comment below and share your thoughts or experience with a new build project. And if you are considering a new build or involved with one right now, why not engage with us here at SECTRE? We have guided a number of candidates and clients through this process and we are here to help.#thinktechnical #thinkSECTRE

If you ask AI about the three most important skill sets for yacht refittingWhen undertaking a yacht refit in a yacht refit shipyard, the following three bullet points highlight essential aspects, emphasizing that the skill set of those involved is paramount:Expertise in Specialized Skills: The success of a yacht refit project largely hinges on the availability and involvement of highly skilled professionals. This includes expert marine engineers, electricians, carpenters, and painters, among others, who possess not only a deep understanding of their craft but also the nuances of working on luxury yachts. These specialists must be adept at customizing their approach to fit the unique needs of each yacht, ensuring both functionality and aesthetics are enhanced to the highest standards.Comprehensive Project Management: A yacht refit involves a complex coordination of tasks, materials, and timelines. Effective project management is crucial, requiring a project manager with a strong skill set in planning, communication, and problem-solving. This individual must oversee the entire refit process, from initial assessment and planning through to execution and final quality checks, ensuring that each phase is completed on time, within budget, and to the owner's satisfaction. Their ability to foresee challenges and swiftly address them is key to a successful refit.Access to Advanced Facilities and Technology: The physical infrastructure and technological capabilities of the yacht refit shipyard are critical. The shipyard must be equipped with advanced facilities that can accommodate the specific needs of yachts, including dry docks, lifting equipment, and specialized tools. Furthermore, leveraging cutting-edge technology in design, fabrication, and finishing processes allows for precision workmanship and innovation in refitting tasks. A skilled workforce that is trained to utilize these technologies effectively can significantly enhance the quality and efficiency of the refit process.#ai #yachtrefit #future # technology #global-yachtrefit #gloabyachrefit#
