The lads might be dab-hands at this red carpet thing by now, but one member of the band Kneecap sufferred a hilarious blunder while being interviewed live on the BAFTA YouTube channel.
The band , Mo Chara (aka Naoise O Caireallain), Moglai Bap (aka Liam Og O Hannaidh) and DJ Provai along with director Rich Peppiatt joined Clara Amfo for a chat where she asked them how it felt to create a role that was essentially themselves, but also a character of who they are.
DJ Provai decided to answer her question, but got his words a little muddled, and it’s not clear whether it was intentional or not, but either way, it was hilarious.
He said (while wearing an Irish-flag-themed suit to complement his balaclava): ‘It was a born we were role to play,’ which spawned histerical laughter from everyone, and he added that we can rejig the words outselves.
The film has had a massive impact around the world, but it seems like it has been a surprise to some people that Ireland has an actual language at all.
Naoise explained: ‘Yeah. I mean, I think especially in America, I think Americans didn’t know that there was a language, like an actual Irish language. I think they thought the Irish language was just English with a funny accent. It was definitely a learning curve for a lot of Americans.’
Director Rich added: ‘There’s also the fact that all around the world, it’s at the end of the film, a language dies every 40 days. So it’s been so interesting for us, travelling around the world with the film and having people from every background you can imagine [telling us] we’ve got our own language struggles [and] we’ve got our own cultural struggles.
‘And also, we need to remember the fact that the British empire once owned a third of the world. So now, when you make a film where you’re sticking the middle finger up to the Brits, don’t be surprised if a third of the world turns around and says, “Yeah, we’re gonna go watch that.”
‘Ultimately, the legacy of colonialism still exists in a lot of places in the world and so I think the film resonates on that level for a lot of people too.’
